Hudson Police Training Goes High-Tech

by Len Lathrop

Police officers

have to make life-and-death decisions every day and now, thanks to some cutting-edge technology provided by grant funding, Hudson Police are the first in this area use the MILO Range PRO HD system, which is manufactured by IES Interactive Training Inc. of Ann Arbor, MI. Hudson selectmen learned about the equipment on Saturday morning. The high-definition, interactive simulator trains officers to respond to more than 400 scenarios, as well as allows the department to create its own scenarios. Used since 2000 by the U.S. Secret Service, FBI, Drug Enforcement Agency, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Army, the Navy, the Coast Guard, and law enforcement agencies around the world, among others, the MILO Range PRO HD system also allows Hudson officers to sharpen their range shooting skills—practice that will come in handy

Selectman Coutu “dies” drawing the incorrect weapon in simulation training

the scene to see the officer’s reaction and if force was used when they hit their target. This training results in officers being better prepared for making appropriate, split-second, use-of-force decisions if faced with such a situation.

“Officers can learn from their mistakes without

any negative consequences,” Hoebeke said. ”If they are going to make an error, we’d rather have it made in the simulation training room where it can be corrected and learned from, rather than out on the streets where someone could get hurt.” Hudson’s finest will be able to first practice making those decisions virtually before having to make them in the real world. This past week, the Laconia Police Department joined Hudson in becoming only the second police department in New Hampshire to begin using the system.

Officer Christopher Cavallaro demonstrates adding a laser unit to a taser for training

when they have to fire their real gun or taser. Hudson officers Joe Hoebeke and Christopher

Cavallaro demonstrated the system and allowed the selectmen to holster up, see how good of a shot they were, and see how real the simulator made them feel. ”This system allows the officers to train on reaction times and decision-making skills that you cannot recreate at the firing range,” said Police Chief Jason Lavoie. The simulator, which is housed in the Kirby building across the street from the police station, is comprised of a computer system that projects life-size video and graphics-based exercises that simulate real-life situations onto a large screen. Officers’ personal side arms are equipped with a laser and are directed by the training officer to prepare to respond to a scenario. Over 400 scenarios are built into the system, including domestic disputes, which are among the department’s most frequent calls for service, as well as fights, car stops, and robberies. The scenario unfolds in front of the officer, who then acts to control the situation either by voice command or by using a weapon—or a combination of the two. The training officer who operates the simulator can control the “suspect” and can make him or her comply with the officer’s commands, or they can come out and “shoot” you. After the scene has been completed, you can rerun
