e all know that minutes can seem like hours when it comes to cardiovascular training at the gym, but those 20 minute sessions will pass by much quicker if you are listening to music, and will leave you feeling good.

When you are listening to your favourite music, you focus less on what your body is experiencing and more on the sound you are hearing.

It has been found that when running on a treadmill at a moderate intensity, there is a 10% reduction in perceived exertion when exercising to music compared to no music. A similar study found a 15% improvement in muscular endurance when listening to music. The type of music you are listening to is also important as it can change the mood you are in, so must be appropriate to the exercise you are doing. Slow music can be relaxing so is ideal for cooling down, whereas faster music can be invigorating and is better matched to high intensity exercise. When running, choose music with a beat that you can comfortably exercise in time to and the exercise will seem smoother in movement and more motivating. If you are strength training, it has been found that listening to slow music can actually decrease muscular ability! So, next time you are exercising, ask yourself if you could benefit from exercising to music, and if you already do, could your choice in music affect your long term fitness goals?
