There is a commonly held belief that our family is the one place where we can feel safe and that the other members of our family will be there for us unconditionally, helping us through whatever life may throw at us.
However, there are times when the relationships within a family can go wrong or experience problems.
Family counselling can sometimes be useful in helping people to cope with difficult events that happen in life and
improve their interaction with other members.
Research shows that family counselling can help when a family experiences a major trauma such as the death of someone, when a family member is affected by a drink or drug problem or with the complexities of being a step parent or child.
Most families can benefit from family counselling even if the family is not experiencing a major problem. In the busy modern world we live in, it can be hard for parents to find the time they need to listen to their children to find out how they are feeling and family counselling provides a safe place for this to happen.
What is family counselling?
Family counselling helps members of the family to understand and deal with the common problems associated with family life and family relationships.
Most people would hope that their family is a place where they might find help, love and support. However sometimes relationships within families are put under strain and problems follow.
Family counselling can help family members to communicate, overcome their differences and problems and understand one another. It can lead to healing rifts between family members and create a more harmonious family life, by allowing everyone to have a voice and to be heard.
How do I know if my family needs family counselling?
Family counselling can help when siblings aren’t getting on or parents are going through a divorce or separation. If you feel that communication between yourself and a child or teenager has broken down and you are not sure what else you can do, then it may be time to come and see us for an introductory session and see how counselling may be able to help.
