plymouth’s gilbert & sullivan fellowship return to their
roots with ruddigore
The multi award-winning Plymouth Gilbert and Sullivan Fellowship are this year returning to their roots with a production of ‘Ruddigore or The Witch’s Curse.’
Ruddigore, under the direction of Alan Spencer, with full orchestra under the musical direction of Dr Paul Foster follows on from last year’s production of Lehar’s The Merry Widow.
Featured soloists include Bianca Phillips, Helen Haviland, Gill Regan, Isla Ellis, Stuart Whitehead, Richard Clark, Peter Clements, Gareth Davies and Rod Hunt.
“It will be a rare opportunity,” said Fellowship spokesperson Pauline Smith “to see one of the lesser known of the so-called Savoy light operas performed to the Fellowship’s high standards.
“Ruddigore is a parody of the Victorian melodrama, with its witch’s curse, mad woman, bad baronets and ghostly ancestors who descend from their portraits to haunt and threaten the current baronet of Ruddigore.”
The Fellowship have also been invited to take the production to the renowned Buxton International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in August – the first time a company from the South West has had that honour. At last year’s festival Rod Hunt won the award for Best Male Singer for the role of Sir Roderic Murgatroyd which he reprises this year with the Fellowship.
The show runs from May 11 to May 15 at the Devonport Playhouse, Fore Street, Plymouth PL1 4DW, evenings at 7.30pm plus a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
