youth matters

city-wide initiative to highlight

achievements of young people

People in Plymouth are being asked what they think of the youth of today as part of a massive campaign to improve how young people are seen in their local communities.

The ‘Kids Are Alright’ is a thought-provoking new campaign launched at the beginning of March, aimed at challenging stereo-types about young people and particularly teenagers. It will run for one year and aims to improve the local image of young people by measuring what people think of them now, then comparing it with views in a year’s time after the campaign has done its work.

It’s being lead by Plymouth City Council’s Youth Service, but involves a huge amount of community support including Devon and Cornwall Police, the Council’s Community Safety Partnership and Anti-Social Behaviour Unit, Plymouth Argyle’s Kickz project, Devon and Cornwall Criminal Justice Board, Devon and Somerset Fire Brigade and the local media including Cornerstone Vision’s plymouth magazine and Shopper series, plus young people themselves.

People across the city will be asked to take part in a survey saying what they think about young people today. It is hoped that perceptions will change during the 12 month campaign

Local residents are being encouraged to nominate young people for recognition of their achievements in the community. The successful nominees will then feature in ongoing publicity for the campaign.

As part of the initiative ‘wanted’ posters of local youngsters have been produced to challenge stereotypical views. One of the youngsters featured is 16-year-old Oli Milroy. He appears on a poster with the heading ‘what you see is not always what you get’ and highlights the fact that he is a charity fundraiser. (see picture left).

Oli is a student at Plymstock School and has recently been raising money for a Plymouth-based charity. He has always dreamed about doing a skydive from an early age and now that he is 16 he decided to make the jump to benefit his community.

He completed the skydive on the day the Kids Are Alright initiative was launched raising the money for the Drake
