First Shot
Calling All Writers
Despite the lower page count, the April issue proved to be a bit of a struggle. When I originally laid out the editorial calendar, I basically had an idea of what the main feature would be for the first five issues. It turned out that we were able to hit the coverage on all five. This sixth issue on the other hand was open for quite a while. I caught a huge break though when Eric Sawyer e-mailed me in early March and asked if I'd like coverage of the Mission Hills Invitational. I was thrilled and of course it worked out better than expected as there was a bit of an upset in the championship flight. You can read all about it on page 12. The open month may have been a little stressful, but I did find time to do a little bit of
an assessment of the overall progress of Croquet Network digital magazine project. The first and most important goal I had in mind was to build a collaborative network of editorial contributors and prove that it could work. In my mind, the collaborative process is working, but I'm only partially finished on the network of contributors. As a magazine that endeavors to cover the sport of croquet across the world, I've always been of the mindset that I would need contacts on both U.S. coasts, then Europe, Australia and New Zealand. I figured I could handle the middle of the United States myself. The West Coast has worked out well in that I've made good contacts with Eric Sawyer and Ben Rothman. They have been invaluable toward keeping this project moving forward. Part of the reason that success played out on the West Coast is that some of the biggest tourneys have been in California (Solomon Trophy and U.S. Nationals). Another factor is that I actually met Eric at the Nine Wicket National Tournament here in Kansas City and we've been talking croquet since. In my progress assessment, I definitely decided it was time to stop letting the little tasks keep getting in the way and get back to developing more contacts. So, East Coast players be on the lookout, I'm targeting that area next. Also, I want to extend an invitation to anyone in those regions to please contact me
at the e-mail below if you are interested in becoming a contributor. It's generally fairly simple -- take some photos, mental notes and ask the champion a few questions and jot down some quotes. The flip side is it's strictly a volunteer job so far and at this point we don't even have a giant end-of-the-year staff party that I can use to entice you. Still, like any start-up, my best selling point is that you're in on the ground floor and it's actually pretty fun. Okay, I'm done selling. As mentioned in the opening, this is a lighter weight issue,
but it still packs a pretty good punch. In addition to the Mission Hills Invitaional coverage, Ben's article on tactics has a slightly different take this month that I think you'll enjoy. We also have our standard player profile on Under-21 GC World Champion Duncan Dixon. Duncan weighs in as our youngest player to be featured so far. Enjoy the issue and contact me if you'd like to be a part of the next one.
