Sustainable Support

Tis issue of Tank You Notes covers many of the exciting events and activities of the past few months, including our

annual Financial Year-In-Review. We are so proud to report that the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation – founded in 1991 – celebrated its 18th year in 2009 by realizing $1,730,732, and by providing more than $1,277,000 in financial support to the hospital for capital improvements, enhanced patient care, cutting-edge technology, state-of- the-art equipment and staff and nursing education. Tis support is so important in helping NHRMC respond to its unique challenge of meeting record demand for quality healthcare in the face of declining reimbursements and rising costs – with no tax dollar support. Te Foundation’s mission of providing philanthropic support to NHRMC has never been greater

and will only increase. Twenty years ago, no one could have imagined that robotics, genomics and nu- clear medicine would be considered “routine” in healthcare. So, what will it look like 20 years from now, and how will it effect you and your family? Tose are the questions we asked when we began developing our new Planned Giving Program. It is because of the planned gifts made today that NHRMC will have the funds needed in the future to purchase the most advanced technology and latest equipment for our patients. But a planned or legacy gift can provide more than the satisfaction of knowing your charitable goals are met. A planned gift may also provide current tax advantages, increased income and/or provide support for a loved one. In our effort to inform people about the planned giving opportunities at NHRMC, this issue of

Tank You Notes features the first in our ongoing series of financial planning articles from members of the Foundation’s new Professional Advisory Council – a group of professionals who have volunteered to assist us in sustaining our mission to support NHRMC. Please take a moment to visit our website,, and click on “Planned Giving” to see a complete list of Council members and to learn more about legacy (planned) giving opportunities. If you have already made a provision for NHRMC in your estate plans, please let us know so that we may recognize you on the new Beacon Society donor wall – a special recognition for those who have made a planned gift or endowment to NHRMC. Although most donors want nothing in return for their generosity, allowing us to recognize your commitment may inspire others to follow the example you have set. Tank you so much for your support of New Hanover Regional Medical Center, our staff and the

patients we serve today and in the future. Enjoy the issue.

Featured on the cover of this issue are Brian and Ashley McCormack with their daughter, Megan. The McCormack’s have included the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation in their estate plans and say the formula is simple, with an exceptional result. “Individual donors provide the benevo- lence, the Foundation provides the resources for NHRMC and the hospital provides the services to the thousands of people in our community,” says Brian McCormack. The McCormack’s daughter, Megan, began her life prematurely in the Neo- natal Intensive Care Unit at NHRMC. She is now a healthy and active 7 year old. The family feels that “having this NICU in our community is such a bless- ing.” Brian and Ashley say that philanthropy is not predicated upon extraor- dinary wealth, and it is so important for members of this community to give back in some way. Making a provision for NHRMC in your estate planning is one of those ways.
