An Overview
ofDyslexia
by Dr. Michal Luchins
Perhaps this is due to the murky defi- nitions and hazy boundaries separat- ing them. Or, perhaps this is because there is no quick test for any of these diagnoses. Are these three conditions really part of an all encompassing pattern?

Symptoms of Dyslexia
According to Dr. John Stein, professor of neuroscience at Oxford University Medical School, dyslexia affects 20 percent of boys and five percent of girls. Common visual symptoms of dyslexia include unstable vision with words sliding or swimming; letters and words ap- pearing to wobble; poor visual memory which contributes to poor spelling; and, confusion of the order of letters. Common auditory symptoms include impaired auditory development which

leads to phonological confusion and less sensitivity to changes in sound frequency and intensity, mis-sequencing of word sounds, days of week, months of the year and, in general, being disorganized. Impaired motor development which leads to speech impediments, poor handwriting and clumsiness and poor coordination, mixed handedness and left-right confusion are other symptoms of dyslexia. Other symptoms include inattention, delays in developmental milestones, se-
quencing problems and a high incidence of immune anomalies such as allergies, hay fever, asthma, eczema and lupus. It also is noteworthy that those with dyslexia are often very creative, such as in art and music.

Dyslexia and the Eye
Dr. Stein’s research has shown that there are two types of nerve cells within the visual pathways. These cells are magnocellular and parvocellular cells, which comprise the M-cell and P-cell pathways. The M system is involved primarily with the processing of aspects of spatial orientation and information about where one is in space, thereby contributing to balance, movement, coordination and pos- ture. The P system provides detailed information about the object of regard and is important for clear and precise vision. Since the M-cells are key to seeing fast movements, their incomplete develop-
ment affects one’s ability to process fast, detailed information. Especially because the M-cell and P-cell pathways usually work in sync, any alteration of the normal order and timing of processing rates of the M-cell and P-cell pathways can result in a visual problem.
Dyslexia and the Nervous System
Dr. Stein’s research has shown that these magnocellular neurons are important for timing; this applies to visual as well as auditory events. He has also discovered
