The Trouble with Antidepressants
F
Redei, Ph.D., using rats (their brains are remarkably similar to ours in areas related to depression), suggests that antide- pressants are more suited to treating stress than depression and undermines the belief that stress itself can be a major cause of depression. Redei’s research further suggests why antidepressants that
aim to boost levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepi- nephrine and dopamine are also often ineffective. Her team did not find the dramatic differences in the levels of genes controlling the function of these neurotransmitters that would be ex- pected if depression were related to their activity. In a Neuroscience
2009 conference presenta- tion, Redei concluded that today’s antidepressants have been focusing primarily on the effects of depression, not its
cause. Renowned integrative physician Andrew Weil com- ments that in his view, meditation and regular aerobic exer- cise are more effective depression busters.
TAI CHI LESSENS ARTHRITIS PAIN
School of Medicine shows that patients with knee osteoarthritis who engage in regular Tai Chi exercise both improve their physical function and experience less pain. Tai Chi benefits arthritis sufferers, report research- ers, because its range of slow rhythmic move- ments enhances balance, strength and flexibility and induces mental relaxation, all of which contribute to a more positive perception of health and well being.
