Fuel efficient driving

(NC)—By changing your driving habits, even a little, you could save hundreds of dollars a year in fuel and help reduce your carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Fuel-efficient driving is a safe way of driving that produces the lowest fuel consumption from every vehicle, regardless of vehicle size and age. Here are some tips to get you started:

• Accelerate gently - Every time you put your foot on the gas pedal, you feed fuel to your engine - the harder you apply the gas, the more fuel your engine uses and the more emissions your car produces. Pretend you have an egg or water balloon beneath your foot to keep things light;

• Maintain a steady speed – To avoid

unnecessary acceleration altogether, drive at a steady speed. Not only will you consume less fuel, but you will also help enhance traffic flow, minimize exhaust emissions and enjoy safer driving conditions;

• Anticipate traffic – Avoid the unnecessary fuel consumption – and safety risk – associated with hard braking and rapid acceleration by reading the road ahead and anticipating situations before they arise. This basic defensive driving technique negates the need for sudden stops and saves fuel;

• Coast to decelerate – As a driver, you often need to apply your brakes to bring your vehicle to a complete stop. By removing your foot from the accelerator as early as possible, you can decrease your speed, conserve fuel and save money all at the same time;

• Avoid high speeds - It's tempting to speed on the highway but by reducing your speed from 120 km/hour to 100 km/hour you can lower your fuel consumption by about 20 per cent.

• For the average driver, fuel-efficient driving can result in a 25 per cent reduction in fuel costs or roughly $500 a year - $2,500 over five years. Not only does fuel-efficient driving save fuel, but it also reduces maintenance costs. During a recent challenge, drivers reduced brake usage by over 33 per cent.

By applying fuel-efficient skills, drivers can save fuel, reduce maintenance costs, and reduce the impact of their driving on the environment.
