LEADERS

Adrianna Hansen is a 15-year-old Grade 10 student at St. Michael's School in Bow Island. This girl is an independent thinker who knows how to get the best out of everyone. She illustrates this by spending her time reading, knitting, babysitting, quilting, reading at Church, and spending time with family. Adrianna is the oldest of five children and naturally has always had someone follow her, but they like to follow her, as she is always off on a new, educational adventure that no one wants to miss out on. She would rather just take charge and get something done, than to sit around wasting time. Adrianna's faith is extremely important to her. She volunteers at Catholic Retreats, teaches vacation bible school, and does reading lessons regularly at her church. She campaigns widely for world justice such as the tireless hours spent on 30 Hour Famine and on constructing quilts for Lutheran World Relief. Adrianna qualified to attend a week-long leadership conference (CSLC) in Prince Edward Island in 2008.

Alexa Roth is a student of superior talent and character at Crescent Heights High School. She has maintained an honours average and is an exemplary school citizen whose community spirit positively impacts the lives of others. She is part of CHHS’s elite Theatre Arts class. She has had lead roles in the following productions: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Musical 2010, Back To The 80’s Musical 2009, Disney’s High School Musical On Stage Musical 2008, and was in the Annie Musical 2006. Alexa takes on challenges that are difficult and time consuming such as writing the program for the musical, setting the tone for rehearsals, and really living in the moment while on stage. Alexa is a member of Students Against Drinking and Driving Chapter, Key Club (Kiwanis International) and Student Council for four years. She gives presentations for large groups, works on spirit weeks, organizes pep rallies, as well as school dances. She has also worked with the adult Kiwanis Groups and has been an integral part of the chapter. She steps forward and volunteers to help younger students in the productions and during her spare block at school, she did all of the technical requirements for the past Remembrance Day assemblies. Donating her expertise to work with younger students is common for Alexa — volunteers to perform in the SD76 Education Foundation Telethons, she tutors students in English and Social Studies, and has worked in the Health Services Program at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. She is an example of dedication, reliability, and kindness to all who know her. Alexa is an outstanding role model to younger students. There are six years of contributions given to our school, community, and city from Alexa Roth.

Ashley Larter is currently in Grade 10 at Crescent Heights High School. She has been on the honour role since elementary school and that is when she began her volunteer work. While attending George Davison School, Ashley started volunteering in the The Before School Breakfast Program, The Hot Lunch Program, Lunch Monitor for Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2, AMA Safety Patroller, Milk Monitor and library helper. While at George Davison, Ashley received a Certificate of Merit Award for Citizenship. In 2006, at the age of 12, Ashley received a Standing Ovation Award from Chat TV 6 & 3 for her actions which saved a life. A shley was in a position where her quick thinking and unselfish attitude allowed her the opportunity to help someone in dire need of help. Ashley had to perform the Heimlich maneuver on a person who had an object lodged in her throat and was no longer able to breathe. Ashley rushed to her aid without hesitation and was able to dislodge the object. She had been taught the Heimlich maneuver while taking a babysitting course. One of Ashley’s greatest loves in life is animals. Her fondness for animals led to volunteer work at the Medicine Hat SPCA where she walked dogs and played with the cats. Ashley began horseback riding while in Grade 2 and is now an accomplished rider. She has won ribbons in every horse show she has entered both in jumping and flat work. Ashley loves horses and riding and this love led Ashley to volunteering at Country Haven Stables where she is currently training. This volunteer work for a year-and-a-half allowed Ashley more time to work with the horses and the opportunity to help beginner riders learn more, such as how to tack up and care for the horses. Ashley also walked and jogged many miles leading a horse with handicapped riders on them. Ashley’s caring and common sense approach has been an asset to her volunteering. Ashley is currently volunteering with the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation. She became involved with the foundation as a result of her father having heart disease. Her father began volunteering his time to this cause and so Ashley thought it would be a great way to say thanks to a group that are helping so many including her father. Ashley has helped in the local office with telephone work as well as kit preparation. Together Ashley and her father are currently working on developing a mapping system for Heart and Stroke canvassers. Ashley is a kind, thoughtful and caring person with a special selflessness to help whenever the opportunity arises.

It is hard to imagine a more responsible elementary school student than Ashley Ulrichsen, who balances her academic achievements with after-school activities and a love for helping others. This Grade 6 student at Herald School brings home top grades in all but one of her subjects — gym — but plans to make up ground through her horseback riding lessons, cross-country running and by playing community soccer this spring. Her positive attitude and leadership skills have earned her the school's Principal's Award in each of the last two years. Over that time she has volunteered in the lunch canteen. She also works with the student council, helping to organize school activities, and takes part in her school's yearly public speaking competition. Ashley sets aside one third of her allowance for her savings account and another third is earmarked for a local charity (the SPCA this year). Her own love of reading led her to volunteer with the Homebound Services program at the Medicine Hat Public Library. She delivered books with her mom to a senior book buddy and was keen to help out with odd jobs at their home, such as raking leaves. One can see great things on the horizon for this patient, hardworking, and positive young girl.

Anya is a hardworking Grade 4 student at Medicine Hat Christian school. She loves to draw, paint, and make arts and crafts. When she's visiting her grandmother, Anya has fun working with clay on her grandmother's pottery wheel and delights in the finished product that comes out of the kiln. Anya's interest in the arts has led her into volunteering her time with younger children in her church. Every week, Anya spends time encouraging Grade 1-3 students at her church to learn their Sunday school lessons through their weekly art activities. Not only does she spend time assisting these younger children with the assembly of their crafts, but she also spends extra time setting up the classroom, preparing materials for the lesson and cleaning up. For the past several years, Anya has been taking lessons in tap, ballet and jazz. Musical Theatre, piano lessons, and singing in a Children's Choir are all a part of Anya's artistic repertoire. Her love for the arts is balanced with her many sports interests. She plays soccer, skiis and especially enjoys riding her grandparents' horses whenever she gets a chance. She loves animals and pitches right in with whatever needs doing in the barn. Last summer, Anya's love for animals spurred her on to set up a lemonade and ice cream booth with her cousin. She and her cousin manned the booth on Third Street and decided to donate the proceeds from their lemonade and ice cream directly to the local SPCA. The duo hand-delivered the donation and thoroughly enjoyed the ensuing tour of the SPCA facilities. Anya's thoughtfulness and consideration of others is evident at school, at home, or wherever she goes. She has a strong sense of what is right and has the courage to follow through on her convictions. Such strength of character is wonderful to see in such a young person. She inspires other children around her to do what is right and good, a truly remarkable attribute in a truly remarkable student.
