I much prefer to spend money on something that someone has made using their own creative skills than something mass produced in a factory overseas.

What advice would you give someone trying to start their own handmade business?

Setting up your own business is much harder work than any job. You must enjoy what you do and be prepared to live and breathe it. You will be the boss, the creative director, the sales manager, the marketing manager, the accountant, the production manager etc! You won’t have skills in all these areas, focus on what you are good at and ask for help with the rest.

Finally, do write a business plan and set out a budget and a set of targets,

then monitor your progress. You must know what your costs are to price correctly, if you don’t focus on this side of things you won’t have any idea as to your profitability.

If you had time to learn a new skill what would it be?

Interior design and soft furnishings.

How do you get word out about your soaps?

I attend a number of farmers markets and craft fairs and give out as many cards and leaflets as possible. I also spend quite a lot of time online promoting my website.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I would like to see the majority of my sales coming through the internet.
