MEET: Poppy Treffry

Please tell us who you are and what you do?

My name is Poppy Treffry and I founded Poppy Treffry Ltd in 2006. We are a small company based in Newlyn, Cornwall making a range of freehand embroidered textiles that we sell to shops throughout the UK, Europe, Japan and the US. Our products are stocked in Fortnum and Mason, Selfridges and the Eden Project and the company employs seven people.

How long have you been making things?

I grew up in Cornwall with a creative family. We lived on a self sufficient farm and my mum had her own very small hand knit business making fair- isle jumpers. I wanted to be a painter but got into textiles during my foundation course. I then went on to study textile design at Winchester School of art and specialised in printed textiles.

I taught myself machine embroidery after I left college as a means of transferring my drawings onto fabrics. I produced a range of hand bags as I thought ‘girls always buy bags!’ Unfortunately I was not so good at the selling side so these never made it to any shops and ended up packed away in a suit case for 4 years!

I then went on to do voluntary work overseas - running a really
