Once owned by the Butler Dynasty, Mount Aaron, as it was known then, came into the possession of the Wolseley family of Staffordshire in 1725. It was the ancestral home of the famous brothers Field Marshal Viscount Garnet Wolseley, one of Britain’s most important military leaders, and Frederick York Wolseley, in whose Birmingham factory the first British designed car was built in 1895.
A short history of the Wolseley family titled “Mount Wolseley House” details the important contribution of the family to the military, engineering and business world. Copies are available at the reception of Mount Wolseley Hotel.
In 1925 the property became the world-wide headquarters of the Patrician Order, founded in Tullow in 1808 by Bishop Daniel Delaney.
In 1994 Mount Wolseley Estate was purchased by the Morrisseys and is now home to Donal & Breda Morrissey and their family Mary, Don, Ann Marie, Sandra and Lisa. Since then the Estate has been developed to become the Mount Wolseley Hotel, Spa & Country Club. The house and gardens are private, but may be viewed at the entrance gates beside the hotel.
