A century and a half ago Francis F. Hayden wrote that the view of Co. Carlow from Mount Leinster was “as wild, as romantic and picturesque a range of scenery as ever attracted the pen of a Byron, the pencil of a Reynolds or the genius of a Thomson”. He talked about the country’s “fertile vales and lawns, unfolding their several beauties to the feasted eye of the entranced traveller”.
Much has changed since Hayden's lines were written in 1822 but no doubt he would still be well pleased with the sporting oasis created on the former demesne lands of the Wolseley family at Mount Wolseley, near Tullow, where today stands a world-class Hotel and an 18-hole championship golf course of international standards.
