At what point should the leading team in a lopsided basketball game ease up on its opponent? For starters, a safe bet would be to draw the line at a 30-point advantage and then take the press off. If the losing team crawls back to within 15, it would be time for the leaders to get serious again. But let’s look at a team that doesn’t

believe in playing by the score. In national sports news, Houston’s Yates High School won its second straight Texas basketball state championship this March. Its coach, Greg Wise, prides his squad on always playing to its full potential, regardless of what the scoreboard says. Consequently, Houston Yates this season has beaten teams by margins of 135, 115, 99 (on two occasions), 98, 90, and 88 points. And you thought the last time your team got blown out by 30 was bad. Yates rolled over Houston’s Lee High School, 170-35, in their 135-point win. The funny part (or not so funny, if you’re Lee) of that one was Yates kept the full court press on after leading 100-12 at halftime. When you have an 88-point lead at halftime, don’t you think its time to ease up? Clearly, Coach Wise doesn’t think so. Wise says he wants his team to practice pressing and trapping, and straying from that ideal will not help it get better. But

the way his team has pummeled other teams has definitely raised more than a few eyebrows. He has been criticized of purposefully running up the score on opponents, thoroughly embarrassing high school kids who have done nothing to deserve it. Many of his critics think he is all about

chasing records, such as the one Yates obtained for most consecutive 100-point games with 15, only to have it broken by another team soon after. Scoring 170 against Lee was also a single-game record for the state of Texas. One can’t deny that he’s after the stardom that comes along with leading such a dominant program. Set the critics aside, though. I respect

how Wise wants to give his third unit a chance to compete just as hard as his first unit. With that idea in mind, he still needs to ease up. He’s walking a fine line between competitiveness and sportsmanship. Yes, as a coach, you should teach your athletes to be ready to go at all times, but you also have to teach them how to win and lose with class. Trying to clobber your opponent by over 50, let alone over 100, is not respecting them. If Wise keeps this up, a lot of unforeseen events can stem from a game in which his team continues to pour in the points. The biggest one to me is that players and fans can physically get hurt.

When It’s Possible to Score Too Many Points

Imagine being on the losing team, down, say, about 80. The game’s already lost and Yates is just rubbing it in now. Here come the hard fouls and the cheap shots. No one likes losing, especially when it’s that badly. Any team down by that much will feel it’s necessary to fight back, and with an insurmountable deficit, the only way to fight would be through physical contact. Look over at what’s going on in the

bleachers. Here’s where things can really get out of hand. A couple of rowdy fans from Yates start boasting about how good their team is (as if people didn’t know already), and a couple of fans from your losing team might feel like they have to respond with physical force to stand up to the beating their team is taking out on the floor. The line needs to be drawn before things get out of control, if they haven’t already. One basketball coach’s quest for glory is being reached in all the wrong ways, and he is destroying the integrity of a game in the process. Over the years, the game has taught thousands of people about sportsmanship and how to compete with class, which Wise’s players are learning none of right now. If he doesn’t clean up his act, will he

ever be disciplined? What will it take for someone to stand up to him?
