ARLYrecords of Southend in the Domesday Book show the area was divided between Milton Priory and
Prittlewell Priory –which owned land that stretched to the seafront. By the end of the 15th Century the south end of the lands of Prittlewell Priory became known as South End. In the 17th Century the original South End was bought by Hercules Arthur,who changed the name of his principal house from Facons Farm to Southend. He also bought land to the west of South End Lane –now Old Southend Road and Southchurch Avenue –and the area was developed in the mid-late 18th Century. Buildings had been built right along the
seafront, from South End Lane to Marine Parade, by the end of the 18th Century. This area became known as the lower
or old town, when anew development called the new or upper town was built on the cliffs. The Grand Terrace and its
