PES Celebrates Dr. Seuss’ Birthday
Dr. Seuss’ birthday in March with a weeklong adventure into the clever and oddly charming world of the author. Each day during the Read Across America celebration, the school featured a popular book by Dr. Seuss and used the story themes for dress-up activities and interesting literary discussions. For example, during a library
lesson of Horton Hears A Who in
the school’s media center, school librarian Lynn Green led the kids in a discussion of the book’s primary message: “A person is a person, no matter how small.” The students enjoyed
mismatched sock day, crazy hair day, and hat day, along with the many planned activities in individual classrooms and unified arts. Also, throughout the final day (Friday), PES invited special guest readers from the police, recreation, and town departments, the public library, the School Board, the PES staff and retired staff, and some well-respected members of the community. PES Principal Alicia LaFrance dressed up as the “Cat in the Hat” and visited with students. Fifth-grade student leaders,

volunteered to read to the younger students during the day. The library offered refreshments
such as coffee, water, and a fanciful Dr. Seuss cake to all of the readers. Lynn Green was the coordinator of Read Across America this year, and despite an illness that forced her to miss a portion of the event, she was pleased with how the week turned out. “I want to thank the unified arts team and staff in the office who helped to set out the refreshments, and also a big thanks to Michelle Viger for stepping in for me when I wasn’t able to be there to greet our guest readers,” she enthused. She also was very appreciative of all the guest readers who volunteered their time and demonstrated the wonderful benefits of reading.
