“Super-kettle” is a green machine
Thistle Energy, a spin- out company from Thistle Generators has been granted the licence to an American invention that turns waste heat into electricity. The company plans a £40million turnover in the next three years, initially by selling the Electra Therm ‘green machine’ and then by manufacturing it for the European market. The device is designed to work on industrial machinery
such as generators or incinerators that give off waste heat.
Operating in a similar way to a kettle on a stove, waste heat from the machinery boils a fluid inside the device, which in turn drives a generator to produce electricity. The Green Machine generates electricity from water no hotter than a cup of tea, but on an
industrial scale, and the resulting electricity can be supplied to the National Grid.
Thistle MD Nigel
Feeney said that he aimed to sell about 150 units before the end of the year, generating about £20m. He added that the potential in Europe was even larger. Within the next three
years he hopes to grow annual revenue to about £40m by installing between 200 and 250 machines in the UK each year, with the potential in Europe being considerably larger.
Rogue cable to be eradicated in pledge to cable a safer Britain
The Approved Cables Initiative (ACI) has launched a proactive and co-ordinated plan to investigate and address the issue of unsafe, non-approved and counterfeit cables in the UK marketplace. This new industry-wide initiative has the objective to communicate, educate and raise awareness of this serious issue. The UK market for electrical cables and systems has an approximate value of £2Bn. It is estimated that up to 20% of cable product in the cable systems supply chain is unsafe, non-approved
or counterfeit.. The ACI, with industry and regulator support, will be taking a determined approach to educate the electrical industry about purchasing and installing such cables and raise awareness of the existence of unscrupulous manufacturers and distributors. The ACI is urging the supply chain to routinely check cable markings and cable reels looking for a manufacturer’s identification that they recognise, so if there is a problem it will help trace the cable back
through the supply chain. If you sell, supply, or install unsafe cable, then you are contravening health and safety regulations, you could void
insurances and could face serious criminal allegations which might result in a custodial sentence. The ACI will regularly
test samples of cables suspected of being unsafe or non- approved, and if found to be unsafe details will be passed to the Police, Trading Standards and the Health and Safety Executive.
Nigel
said that the typical installation cost for fitting a green
machine onto a one megawatt landfill gas generator was about £170,000 and the device could pay for itself within 18 months through the profit made by selling the electricity and
through UK
Government incentives, such as the climiate- change levy.
