AICO smoke alarm training proves a hit with SELECT Members
Following the great success of its free training seminars for SELECT Members on the installation of smoke alarm systems in dwellings last year, Aico is delighted to announce further sessions this year. SELECT has organised the seminars to run from 8th April to 20th May.
Each seminar will be approximately two
hours in length and will cover British Standards and Building Regulations, grades and categories of system, types of alarm sensor, siting and installation of alarms, wiring, alarm interconnection, limitation of false alarms, testing and commissioning and troubleshooting. All attendees will
receive a copy of Aico’s
Electrical Contractors’ Handybook, a comprehensive training manual, Aico’s Product Selector Book, as well as a certificate of attendance. James Cavan, Aico
Regional Specification Manager for East Scotland, said: “SELECT and Aico ran 12 courses last year with 180 contractors attending. We received excellent feedback,
with attendees commenting on the usefulness of the information covered within the training. “We have worked closely with SELECT and have created the training seminar specifically for SELECT Members to ensure targeted, accurate information in a format that is easy to digest. It will provide contractors with the information
and training necessary to achieve a successful and effective fire alarm installation.” For further

SELECT and Edinburgh Napier University help the managers of tomorrow
Elaine Ellis
Eleven managers from Scotland’s electrical industry joined their employers at a special celebration lunch last month, and both parties certainly have something to celebrate. The lucky 11 are the
first to graduate from a new specialist course run by SELECT and Edinburgh Napier University. The skills
they have acquired over the course of their university-style training will take them forward into ever greater responsibility and reward within the management hierarchy in one of Scottish industry’s most exciting and challenging sectors. The pilot course is
the equivalent of a third-year university programme, and the SELECT 11 – from Rok Plumbing and Heating, Arthur McKay, SELECT, FES, Weir & McQuiston and HF Electrical – have just finished. Although they will
officially graduate in a ceremony at Napier University in June, SELECT and Napier decided that their
pioneering spirit deserved its own reward and they organised the lunch, along with the
students’ sponsoring employers. The course, which
was tailored to the needs of managers who want to enhance their people
management skills and their ability to positively engage with their staff in ways that realise potential, will now become a regular feature of SELECT’s bespoke training programme. A second group of students is already halfway through their commitment and a third programme will be starting this month. Elaine Ellis of SELECT, who has been
instrumental in administering the course, said: “This programme is aimed at people who have recently been appointed to the position of manager and/or those who have been working in this capacity for a while but have had little or no management development in this role.
“It is designed to
allow participants to reflect upon and develop managerial knowledge and skills and leads to a Graduate Certificate in Management Practice upon completion.” Elaine added: “The full cost of the programme is £1700. The industry’s training
charity, the Electrical Engineering Training Foundation (EETF) has agreed to part-fund this course next year, meaning that, for SELECT Members, the cost of the course is only £550. This is an excellence opportunity to gain a university- level qualification at a remarkably low price.”
