Voicethreads Vocabulary
By Tiffany Giannicchi
Students in Mr. Olson’s 7th grade math class at Randolph Central School, took a 21stcentury approach to learning the vocabulary in their geometry unit. Instead of just writing the words and definitions they turned vocabulary into an interactive project by making movies and Voicethreads to learn the terms. A Voicethread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, videos and documents. It allows people to navigate pages and leave comments in five different ways ‐ using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video.
All of the students were given the same guidelines (rubric) for the project: • All of the words must have a definition • The project should have pictures or video captures of examples of as many of the words as possible.
• The video or Voicethread should run for 5 minutes or less. • A presentation of individual movies or Voicethread will be given at the end of the unit.
Other than these requirements, students could be as creative as they wanted. They could write a song, perform a skit and interview people around the school for definitions, while cap‐ turing it on video. Students graded their peers’ projects using the rubric that was provided. All projects were posted on the students’ personal wikis along with the class wiki. It was a true classroom team effort to accomplish their vocabulary goal.
