Regional water report to be published on web

The South East Alberta Watershed Alliance is moving full steam ahead on its highly anticipated State of the Watershed Report.
In 2009, the alliance began developing the interactive web-based report, which will use a dynamic mapping program to allow navigation along the watershed, clickable information icons and the ability to print-out criteria.
“We decided we weren’t going to try to publish a big book on the state of the watershed, we decided we’d do it all on the web,” says Peter Wallis, treasurer of the alliance and chair of the State of the Watershed Committee. “We can keep it current, we can update it as we go and it’s cheaper and more interactive for the public.”
The web-based report will include basic information geared toward a general audience, as well as detailed information, such as technical reports, for other stakeholders.
A firm date has not been set for the release of the entire report. Wallis says the web- based platform will be launched in spring 2010, with information from the findings of the alliance’s research.
The long-term vision of the alliance is to ensure “a healthy watershed that provides balance between social, environmental and economic benefits.”
“Having a healthy watershed is pretty darn important,” Wallis says. “Without enough water...our entire economy would be limited.”

The South East Alberta Watershed Alliance (SEAWA) is one of 10 watershed planning and advisory councils in Alberta born out of the province's Water For Life strategy.
The organization elected its first board of directors in April 2008. SEAWA currently has about 40 members.
At its 2010 annual general meeting on March 11, the alliance will be electing 10 new directors to the board, while looking to boost its membership.
The annual general meeting will coincide with the alliance’s “Below Your Watershed” Groundwater Conference, which runs from March 11-12.
The conference will feature speakers from the university, government, research, industry, agriculture, consulting and non-governmental organization sectors.
