Foremost aptly named town
Foremost
Foremost is a fitting name for this small southeastern Alberta village, whose high school athletic teams are top- rated in the province.
The Foremost Falcons and Forette have won first place in numerous provincial basketball, volleyball, track and field and cross-country running competitions. In hockey, the Foremost Flyers are a force to be reckoned with.
Foremost’s roughly 500 residents benefit from thriving agricultural and oil and gas industries, and have weathered the economic downturn exceptionally well. In fact, the village is currently working on a new 55-acre industrial subdivision, expected to be completed this spring.
In recent years, a number of agricultural and oilfield support businesses have moved into the village, and the town is often used as a home base by companies with
oil and gas wells in the area. Mayor Ken Kultgen says a few new businesses are also considering moving to the community this year, because of Foremost’s airport facilities.
“Air space is very open, and not much traffic,” he explains, “so there's a couple of businesses looking... that just need some nice open areas."
The town is also a favorite for city dwellers looking for a new place to settle after retirement.
“Lots of them only plan to be here six months of the year, and six they're traveling,” Kultgen says. “But it's a nice, safe place to own a home that doesn't cost them near as much money. "
Several events are held annually in Foremost, most notably a rodeo and mud bog in June. The Foremost Rodeo, run annually since the end of the Second World

War, attracts upwards of 1,800 people per year with its Friday night senior’s dance, Saturday morning parade and two days of rodeo action.
In addition, the village’s arena, curling rink and baseball diamonds play host to a number of sporting tournaments each year.
The village also has a vibrant arts community, with theatre shows held in the spring and fall at the local school.
Kultgen and village councillors Brent Burton, Lorne Buie, Paul Stryker and George Piper are currently planning to improve Foremost’s tourist booth and expand the local campground.
The community’s dam and trout pond, which attracts fishing aficionados from across southern Alberta, is also up for improvement in 2010.
