full time jobs and then have them show up for workouts,” said Fahlman.

Also boasting big membership numbers, with a total of 55, is the Southern Alberta Combative Arts.

“I’ve been around the sport for 20 some years and it’s growing each year,” said Shane Morgan.

“It’s hit and miss with the small kids. Some that have come out stick around, others leave and sometimes come back. Our club age ranges from five to 40,” added Morgan, who teaches the youngest group in Little Kicks each Sunday.

Although the sport carries the tag of combative, Morgan says SACA teaches and emphasises the utmost in discipline.

“We don’t accept bullying. The kids are taught it as a sport or self defence. Our biggest rule is, ‘if you’re caught using it outside of the school, you’ll be kicked out',” said Morgan.

Combative sports are doing well in Medicine Hat with the Medicine Hat Boxing Club, leading the way with just over 70 active members.

“We are strong, perhaps one of the strongest in the province,” said Medicine Hat Boxing Club coach Kerry Fahlman.

“We steadily get about 20 to 25 guys out on a regular weekly basis.“

“We have a lot of experience in our club as well,” added Fahlman.

“We are strong at the young age group, but at the ages of nine and under, they can’t compete and I think that is a good thing,” said Fahlman, who says competitors must be a minimum age of 10 to fight. He also feels the club’s most experienced fighters come in the 14 to 17 age contingent.

If there is one age group where the boxing club would like to see a sharp increase in numbers, that would be in the seniors division.

“We lack numbers in that age group, but I know from my own family with my son, it’s tough for these kids to work

The Southern Alberta Combative Arts will host their annual Fist of Fury, ‘Stand Up and Fight’, on May 1 at the Cypress Centre.

With the recently completed 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, there has been talk in the past about boxing moving to the winter games from the summer games.

“It makes a lot more sense to me, because, I think of boxing as more of a winter sport than summer,” said Fahlman. “It surprises me that there hasn’t been more talk of that, but we obviously don’t make those decisions.”
