City swimmers benefit from hard work, determination
Medicine Hat News
Local swimmers have made their mark on not only the regional scene, but on the national and international fronts as well.
Peter Schori, head coach of the Alberta Marlins Aquatic Club, feels the success has come as a result of patience, time and a lot of hard work.
“It’s been quite a bit of time and with my time with the club which has been eight years, we’ve had a few of those years which were a rebuilding phase and now we have swimmers on national and provincial teams, so there is an expectation at the higher levels that we can compete with anybody,” said Schori.
“One of the nice things now, the role models for our young swimmers aren’t only at the provincial level, but they're at the international level and when you raise the bar, people jump higher and that’s what we’ve seen with our club.”
Two of the top competitors in AMAC are 24-year-old Richard Hortness, who swam on the University of Nevada Las Vegas team, and 17-year-old Tiana Rissling, who has cracked the top five in Canada.
“Being second in Canada right now is pretty big for me because I have never achieved that ranking before,” said Rissling, whose long term goal is to make the Olympic team.
Success breeds success, and Schori feels the rest of the club feeds off of Hortness's and Rissling's accomplishments.
“There is that level of expectation and once you’ve built it, you have to keep renovating it so to speak and keep making those changes and improvements,” said Schori. “The part that is challenging, it’s no longer good swimming to get to provincials or just qualify for nationals, I expect them to be on the podium internationally, and they expect me to challenge them and provide them the program to do that.”
The city’s other swim club, the Medicine Hat Waves is headed
by second year coach Tom Mortlock. The Waves have been in operation for just over 20 years.
“It was kind of a break off club from AMAC, I was swimming in university at the time,” said Mortlock.
The club has 50 participants and gives the option of competitive swimming.
“We are a club with a lot of potential, but very young at the same time. Our strength is coming from our very young age group,” added Mortlock.
The Waves strongest swimmer, may be 12-year-old Cody Verge, who won a silver medal in the 50 metre breast stroke last year at the provincials.
