Top prizes help draw curlers to Medicine Hat
Medicine Hat News
With the lure of $150,000 in prize money, including $25,000 to the winning rinks, Canada’s best curling teams, men and women, will converge on the Medicine Hat Arena from November 30 to December 5. The Canada Cup of Curling, featuring 10 of our country's top teams in men’s and ladies competition, is a combination of the Scotties and Brier rolled into one.
“Without question. Medicine Hat is a good site for this event and we expect it to be well attended and fans to enjoy the curling itself,” said Warren Hanson, the Canadian Curling Association’s director of event operations and media.

The city hosted the 2004 Continental Cup and drew sell out crowds to curling’s version of the Ryder Cup. That year, a record crowd of 42,317 rolled through the turnstiles. The city once again staged the event in 2007, and despite drawing smaller crowds, Medicine Hat posted the second highest attendance of 26,810. That kept Medicine Hat on the CCA’s radar for future endeavours.
“Those events certainly helped and we had no other reason otherwise, not to look at Medicine Hat to host another one of our championships,” said Hanson.
The Canada Cup originated in Kamloops as part of a local group’s idea and ran from 2003 through 2008. In 2009, the Canadian Curling Association took it over.
“Yorkton hosted the play down last year with sell out crowds and it is our intention to move this event around and not have it restricted to just one centre,” said Hanson.
With the Scotties, Olympics and Brier on television in the past few months, Hanson feels curling – and the Medicine Hat competitions have been well promoted.
“I think curling will have had more exposure on television than in anyone’s life time. The audience for the sport has been huge.”
Medicine Hat will also be treated to both of Canada's Olympic curling teams, as Kevin Martin and Cheryl Bernard will attend the Canada Cup.
“It certainly helps the fact they were in the Olympics and both are from Alberta,” added Hanson.
Martin (2005, 2006, 2009) and Randy Ferbey (2003, 2004, 2007) are 3 time winners in the men’s division, while Calgary’s Shannon Kleibrink (2005, 2009) remains the only 2 time winner on the ladies side.
