Enrolment is up at college
Andrea Klassen Medicine Hat News
Enrolment numbers at Medicine Hat College are on the rise again.
Over 2,700 students are enrolled at the Medicine Hat campus for the winter semester, says registrar Craig Wood, with another 200 taking classes in Brooks. It’s the highest enrolment number the school has ever posted, but Wood says it’s not unexpected.
"In the past where I think a lot of people, especially young males, would graduate from high school and go of into the labour market, they're coming to college now," he explains.
The number of mature students is also on the rise, Wood says, as people who were laid off during the economic downturn look to “recession-proof” themselves by acquiring new skills and training. As a result, Wood says the college’s Academic Upgrading program, which gives students a change to brush up on high school subjects like math and science, is seeing substantial growth.
At the Brooks campus growth has been particularly swift, with enrolment up almost 60 per cent from last year.
"Brooks is a community that's dependent on the oil and gas industry, and with the downturns in that industry we're seeing a lot more people come back to school,” explains Wood, adding that the college’s recently expanded ESL programming geared to new Canadians is also proving popular in the highly multicultural city.
Though the college won’t receive the bulk of its applications for 2010 until March, Wood says the number of prospective students is already slightly up. And though an improving economy could draw students back into the workforce, Wood says he thinks people are seeing the value of having post-secondary skills and certification.
"I know anecdotally, a couple students were laid off from different industries that have had the opportunity to be recalled back to work, and they've made the decision to stick with their education," he says. “It’s great for their part.”
