Ald. John Hamill
Hamill confirmed he will be seeking an alderman’s seat again, and said he expects the Event Centre and taxation to be top of voters’ minds in October. Hamill said he will be pushing for the city to create an Event Centre fund and start putting money into it now. He also said the city needs to do a better job of pursuing grants for other levels of government to pay for the project.
“It would be lovely to have the Event Centre, but let’s do it if we can afford it,” Hamill said.
Mayor Norm Boucher
Boucher confirmed that he will be seeking the top job for a second term, and while he said he doesn’t know who may run against him, he expects the topic of spending to come up again and again.
“I think we’re going to see again at the end of this calendar year that we’re going to be in the black by a good margin,” Boucher said. “For all the people who think we’re overspending, it’s spending what we need to spend to advance our city. Without spending, you’re status quo, and you’re falling behind everyone else - it’s something you have to do.”
Boucher said big issues that will need to be considered at election time include growth and the Municipal Development Plan, and where the city should go in terms of its energy business.
Ald. Robert Dumanowski
“If all things stay equal, yes, I am planning to run for alderman,” said Dumanowski.“I still find it interesting, and feel like I have some knowledge and experience to impart to the community.”
Like his colleagues, Dumanowski agrees the Event Centre will be an election issue, but said the topic of recreation services and facilities — especially in the under-served South Ridge area — will also be a big one.
He also expects there will be some jostling for the Mayor’s seat, although he’s not sure who all the players will be.
“I think there’s appetite for some change again, but I think the public appreciates some consistency and continuity as well,” Dumanowski said.
Ald. Jamie White
White said he has not made up his mind yet whether he will run again.
“I’m definitely undecided. I have to talk it over with my wife and it will be a decision we make together,” he said.
Whether he runs or not, White expects many of the city’s current hot-button issues to carry over into the election campaign.
“I think we have to get this Event Centre discussion finalized,” he said. “And I’d really like to see this Recreation Master Plan get done. We have to get some facilities built for the south — it’s what the young people in our community want.”
Ald. Graham Kelly
Kelly said it’s too early to tell whether he will be running again or not.
“Basically, what I would do is sense the public mood as the year goes on and then make my decision in the fall,” he said.
Kelly said there are three issues that are virtually guaranteed to come up during the next election campaign.
“Unless some final decisions are made, I’m sure the new arena will be an important issue,” he said. “I think fire protection on the north side will be an issue, and I think more recreation facilities in the South Ridge area’s going to be an issue.”

“We’ve been challenged with the price of natural gas being lower than it has been, and there’s a lot of uncertainty right now,” he said. “We need to discuss what do we do, how do we invest, where best can we put our money to ensure the value of what our citizens have moves ahead.”
