Brooks civic candidates weigh their options
amccuaig@medicinehatnews.com
With the provincial civic elections still a few months away, candidates for the Brooks city council haven’t been banging down the doors to city hall to get their nomination papers filed.
But at least one newly incumbent councillor is making no bones about his desires to return to his seat this October.
"I’ll be running again," said Norm Gerestein.
The owner of the city’s Work and Play clothing store said what many in the community and others at city hall have echoed.
"We have an excellent council. We work together well and get things done."
As for accomplishments, he points to the arena and agribition grounds as well as the Newell regional water system.
"The biggest achievement has been the regional cooperation," said Gerestein.
"Now we are moving forward on Second Street (resurfacing and design)."
Also elected for the first time in 2007, Kimberly Sharkey is still weighing her options.
Highlighting the fact while Brooks is a city but its councillors are still part-time, Sharkey stated that it will take some checking to ensure she remains in her seat.
"It takes a lot of time and support of my employer," she said of her seeking re-election.
Councillor in the city’s last council and now mayor of the Centennial City, Martin Shields said there is no absolute guarantee that he’ll run again but he doesn’t see any reason why not to at this point.
"This council has been very focused on getting things done," said Shields.
He added that this council has been hard working, committed and efficient in its delivery of city services.
It hasn’t ever been a question of not accomplishing tasks, said Shields, but "how do we get things done."
Of the six councillors elected in 2007, only Clayton Johnson and Rolf Bander were re-elected.
