With more than a month left until the filing deadline, eight candidates are already vying for three open council seats. The mayor’s spot is also open, with current Mayor Boyd Dunn ineligible to run again after serving a maximum four consecutive terms.
Sen. Jay Tibshraeny, former Chandler mayor from 1994 to 2002, filed his statement of organization in January to try to reclaim his former position.

McDonald’s Mary: drive-thru service with a smile
by K.M. Lang
In an uncertain world, visitors to the McDonald’s at Alma School and Queen Creek roads can count on one thing: Mary Moss will greet them with hospitality and leave them smiling if she can.

GREAT SERVICE: Drive-through customers of McDonald’s Mary receive an extra side of smiles with every order.
Moss, who serves customers at the drive-through window on weekdays, has worked for McDonald’s for nearly five years, and has been so successful at her job her company recently named her Crew Person of the Year for the Southwest Division, while her own customers have honored her with a Facebook Fan Club that numbers more than 1,200 members. “So there’s this lady, Mary, who
works the drive thru at the McDonald’s on Alma School and Queen Creek,” reads Cindy Staeheli’s posting at www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=91185339159, which brings viewers to I Love Mary @ McDonald’s/Chandler. “If you’re having a

NEW IMMIGRATION POLICY: Chandler police officers will be able to check proof of residency status for anyone with a serious offense, but not victims, witnesses or others not involved in the crime, or day laborers looking for work.
by Miriam Van Scott
Chandler police will soon be able to check immigration status when responding to crime calls, following a unanimous ruling last month by the Chandler City Council. The decision rescinds a decade-old restriction that limited such questioning to only the most violent and serious offenders and will allow officers to require proof of residency status from anyone suspected of committing a felony or misdemeanor. Police
department officials are working out the details on the new policy and expect to implement it within 60 to 90 days.
“The last policy revision was done in 1999 and is in need of being updated,” explains Chandler Police Department spokesperson Joe Favazzo. “We have not completed the updated policy as of yet; however, the recommended changes are designed to help officers conduct more thorough criminal investigations.” Though there was no specific incident prompting the change, many felt the existing guidelines put police at a disadvantage and hampered their ability to adequately investigate crimes.
