‘Beauty’ deemed success, raises Haiti funds

More than 300 attended the recent Burns It Up production of “Beauty IS a Beast,” raising $600 in funds for Hope for Haiti.

Local middle schoolers compete in math competition

Several Santan Sun area students and school teams recently competed in the Arizona MATHCOUNTS State Competition with results to be announced soon. Local individual student competitors were Tejas Dharmaraj and Andrew Yuwen from Santan Junior High, Timothy Horng from Aim High Institute, Zhihan Zhang from Gilbert Classial Academy, Timmy Lee from Kyrene Aprende and Sarah Galvin from Paragon Science Academy.

School teams that competed were Hamilton Prep, consisting of Dorothy Giaramita, Amber Guo, Dustin Guo, Ben Yan and Fiona Zhang; Kyrene del Pueblo – Julie Pollak, Patric Cao, Mikhael Evangelista, Amy Hong and Angie Malik; and Paragon Science Academy – Ozan Suerkan, Jordan Hines, Sidharth Kulkami, Martin Rhey and Humza Zubair.

The top four Mathletes from the State Competition advance to the 2010 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition as a team or as individuals to compete for the national title against other middle school mathematicians representing the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands and schools from the Department of Defense and State Department. The 2010 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition is held at the Walt Disney Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, FL., on May 7.

Shrine Circus set for September

The El Zaribah Shrine Circus is held Sept. 17, 18 and 19 at WestWorld, 16601 N. Pima Rd. in Scottsdale.

One boy’s and one girl’s bicycle will be given away at each performance, and elephant and pony rides are available at each performance for children. At 10 a.m. Sat. Sept. 18, there will be a display of all Shrine unit and club vehicles, with a Grand March by all Shrine unit and clubs at the 3 p.m. Sat. Sept 18 show. A proclamation signed by the Scottsdale mayor Manross proclaims the weekend of Sept. 17 through 19 as “El Zaribah Shrine Circus Weekend.” Adult tickets are $15 each. Children younger than 12 years are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Tickets may be purchased at the gate one hour prior to each show. There is no reserved seating.
