Downtown Chandler BBQ
Throwdown, 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. Sat., March 20, downtown Chandler on the east side of Arizona Avenue. Professional and amateur chefs compete for more than $10,000 in cash and prizes in four categories: pork ribs, pork shoulder/butt, brisket and half chicken. There is also a Backyard Division for chicken, burgers, carne asada, salsa and dessert. The nonprofit event also features vendors, music, live entertainment and a beer garden. Proceeds benefit the Chandler Service Club and the Boys and Girls Club of the East Valley. Tickets are $10, which includes five complimentary barbeque samplers and an All-Access Kids’ Zone wristband. Parents can learn how to properly fit a life jacket for their child or themselves, and can have City lifeguards swim test their children to determine which swim class they can enroll in this summer. This dog-friendly, two-mile fun run and walk, followed by lunch and contests with your favorite canine, raises funds and support for Maricopa County Animal Care and Control’s special programs. Activities and contests include $6.95 lunch specials for people; dog lunches available for $3; exhibits and vendor booths; pie eating contest for dogs; gift basket raffles and onsite adoptions through MCACC’s Mobile Pet Adoption Bus. All pets adopted during the event will be spayed or neutered, licensed, provided with leashes or cat carriers and a free wellness exam. Adoption fees are $85 for dogs and $55 for cats. Arizona Renaissance Festival, 10
