centers were recognized for their exemplary leaders by Arizona Business Magazine at its 3rd Annual Health Care Leadership Awards dinner held recently at the Ritz-Carlton in Phoenix. Laurie Eberst was one of three finalists in the Hospital Executive category; Kim Wilson won and Peg Smith was a finalist in the category of Nurse or Nursing Advocate; Dr. Brian Tiffany won in the Physician category; and Dr. Nabil Dib won in the Researcher category. Chandler-Gilbert Community College was named
for the fourth consecutive year to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service learning and civic engagement. CGCC engaged more than 2,500 students and staff in more than 67,000 hours of service during the 2008-09 academic year. In addition to students participating in academic service learning related to their curricula, many clubs and organizations also devoted hundreds of hours to their community through various fundraising and service projects. Don Kalscheur, a member of Risen Savior Lutheran Church in Southern Chandler, is a finalist to receive the inaugural Crystal Award given to members of the Sun Lakes and Sunbird communities who have distinguished themselves by working to make the communities a better place to live. Kalscheur volunteered more than 870 hours, providing transportation, delivering meals and performing minor repairs through Neighbors Who Care, and is an active volunteer at the Perfect Place adult care facility located at Risen Savior. Kalscheur will receive the award at a dinner held on March 27 at Palo Verde Country Club.

at Arizona’s Professional Photographers Association Convention and State Print Competition, held in Tempe. McMaster took first place in the Portrait category with her image titled “Soft Embrace” and won several other merit awards including the Kodak Gallery Award for Photographic Excellence and fourth place in the association’s “Top Ten Photographers of the Year” category. Chandler received the Allstate Foundation’s Agency Hands in the Community award for his commitment to helping others. Along with the award comes a $500 grant for Superior Food Bank, where Gallego has volunteered since 2004. “Allstate is proud to help Superior Food Bank with its cause,” says Denis Bailey, field vice president for
Allstate’s Southwest region. “We believe in supporting programs to strengthen the communities where we live and work.” The Agency Hands in the Community grant program recognizes Allstate agents and personal financial representatives for outstanding commitment to community service with a $500 donation to the charitable organization where they volunteer. Free cultural event at Gilbert Yoga
“Chanting From the Heart” is an evening in the East Indian tradition, featuring Indian food and Aarti, a traditional prayer, at 6:30 p.m. and Kirtan at 7:30 p.m. on Sat., March 20.
Kirtan, which is call-and-response chanting, is a practice that is an integral part of traditional yoga. Meet like-minded individuals and families and experience ancient practices that are said to “clear the mind and bring peace to your being.”
Gilbert Yoga has been serving the community for more than eight years, with more than 35 yoga classes each week for all levels and ages including prenatal yoga, Power Yoga, Hot Yoga, beginners’ yoga, Vinyasa, restorative yoga, Kids’ Yoga and more.
