Brown Bettie Knows Best
~I may not be funny, but I sure know what is.
Recently, the Brown Betties appeared at “Cure in The Canyons” on the gorgeous grounds of the
Four Seasons in Westlake Village. At this Cancer Research benefit, we met and befriended Molly of
Drexelius Chocolates. Molly is the type of girl (woman) who loves to get her groove on and loves
life while doin‟ it. We beckoned her to join us on stage for some choreographed dancing, and she
jumped right on stage with us! See, we like to tell women to Be Your Own Brown Bettie … what that
translates into is, really, just be yourself and be as fabulous as you possibly can while Being
yourself. Molly was definitely being her own Brown Bettie.
After the dance, we chatted with her and decided, as business women, we should join forces. This
past month, we did just that. We decided to do a chocolate tasting event with Drexelius Chocolates
and Brown Betties. The day came; one that we named, “Tasty Tuesday” where we invited the local
residents of Moorpark, CA and beyond to an event filled with yummy chocolate, wine and
empowerment dancing from the Brown Betties. The event was to begin at 6pm… at 5:45, Molly and
I found ourselves full of jitters as we set up our respective display tables in the sleek art studio we
knew would be full of eager participants. By 6:15, there wasn‟t a person in sight. Rather than panic,
we decided to take matters into our own hands, literally. We took a black Sharpee to a poster board
and in huge block letters, spelled out “CHOCOLATE TASTING”. We then marched ourselves
outside of the art studio and stood boldly on the corner enticing passers-by to come in for a
tantalizing treat. I was dressed in full Brown Bettie-ness… red silk slinky dress which falls nicely off
the shoulder, stilettos and fishnets. Molly was business casual in a lovely top and slacks. In the
evening dusk, we were two beautiful Betties illuminated by headlights and the changing traffic light
as I held a bottle of Cabernet and Molly held the sign really high.
We were graced with a few honks of acknowledgement and some questioning stares, yet no one
stopped for our tasting… that is, except for one sheriff. As the cop pulled curbside, Molly and I quite
innocently asked this GI-Joe-looking authoritarian if he was coming in for a taste. His steely stare
let us know the answer to that question (“NO!”) as he promptly and efficiently asked us what we
were doing while glaring at my bare shoulder. Molly, possibly even more perky than me, said,
“We‟re having a chocolate tasting, Sir!!” With a flatter-than-flat expression, he said, “We received a
phone call that you two were out here on the corner with an offensive sign and I‟m here to
investigate that.” Molly and I looked at each other, “Huh?! Offensive?”
Turns out a resident of Moorpark, a quaint sleepy town of 37,000 didn‟t think our “Chocolate
Tasting” sign was all that funny and quite possibly took it seriously. After all, to the non-discerning
eye, I very well could have been a hooker and Molly my pimp and once we lured you inside, we
would have reeaaaallllyyyy treated you to a taste of creamy milk chocolate and a little white
chocolate too!
I assume the sheriff found enough evidence to confirm we were not prostitutes. Molly reached for
his hand to thank him kindly; I did the same; only, it was kinda funny that he was a little hesitant to
shake mine back. We took our chocolate asses back inside, packed up and planned for a better
event next month that wouldn‟t attract so much … attention.
