The new Toughbook H1 Field from
Panasonic - a tablet PC with an IP65 rating
Panasonic has introduced the
Toughbook H1 Field, which it claims
to be the world’s most rugged
handheld tablet computer.
The Toughbook was primarily de-
signed for field personnel in sales, first
responder, inspection and mainte-
nance applications, but was selected
by APM Terminals for its new Port-
smouth Virginia Terminal, which im-
plemented an earlier model, the CF-
08 Toughbook. This unit had an IP54
rating and Panasonic challenged ports
to reconsider whether the IP65 and
higher ratings they demanded were
actually needed.
The industry, however, seems
wedded to the idea that anything less
than IP65 is just not “rugged” enough
for a port environment. In any case,
it is an argument Panasonic no longer
has to make as the new H1 Field
Toughbook has IP65 and MIL-STF-
810G rating,. The latter requires sur-
viving a 6ft drop test.
The H1 includes a 500 nit, 10.4in
dual-touch display that offers both
tablet and touch screen functional-
