THIS MONTH WE
LOOK AT ......
CHILDCARE:
WHAT TO CONSIDER
t
here are a few of us who need not to consider childcare at some point
for our children and when first embarking on this difficult decision, the
information and choices available can seem overwhelming. Here are some
points to consider for your personal circumstances and tips to use when
reviewing childcare for your child. What is suitable for your circumstance?
DAY NURSERY
Nurseries are great for your child’s socials skills, as he’ll mix with other little ones of the same
age. He’ll have several qualified carers looking after him and lots of organised activities. But
they are not so great for parents who need flexible childcare hours and if your child is ill, he’ll
have to stay at home.
Harborough has lots of Day Nurseries across the town, it is worth going to visit them all and see
what they have on offer, talk to other parents about their experiences. For a list look on the early
years web site:

THE CHILDMINDER
You will have a positive instinctive reaction to them and their home environment, it should be
clean, inviting and child friendly. Make sure they share your philosophies on discipline, TV,
appropriate food and are happy to describe a typical day in their household. Childminders are
often more flexible than nurseries, but remember they will probably have a mix of children of
different ages and will therefore have to work round them and often school pick ups.
Ask lots of questions while you are there, you could take time to prepare them in advance. For
example: How long have you been a childminder? What kind of activities and play take place
within a normal day? How many other children will be with my child and what are their ages?
Where will my child rest? And don’t forget to look at their Ofstead report.
For a full list of registered childminders in the Market Harborough area call Karen the
co-ordinator of CHIMES on 01858 646768.
And finally .......... When you have completed your research, weighed up the alternatives, reached
your decision and settled your child into childcare, you should feel confident that he/she is safe,
secure and happy and benefitting from this valuable experience.
