TOM WRIGGLESWORTH’S OPEN RETURN LETTER TO RICHARD BRANSON
The Glee Club, Cardiff. Wed Feb
words ROBIN MORGAN
“I hope you enjoyed it. It was a bit choppy in places, wasn’t it?”
Never usually the summary from an Edinburgh-award-nominee, but Tom Wrigglesworth has just endured
a rather surreal latter half of his critically-acclaimed tour show, in which two punters were kicked out for
disturbing those around them.
Their disgruntled neighbour eventually complained to the security staff and the two were subsequently
ejected, providing a victory for the common good. It is this mix of comedy and morality that Wrigglesworth’s
tour show epitomises.
The show is based on a true story, explains Tom: “A situation... no, it’s more serious than a situation... a
skirmish!” This occurred on the 9.15am train from Manchester to London Piccadilly. After witnessing a
power-hungry train-manager presenting his “phallic” ticket machine and “fiscally raping” an elderly lady
- Lena - for getting on the wrong train, Wrigglesworth stepped in and organised a whip-round from the other
passengers, and was subsequently arrested for begging.
This injustice was eventually overturned, and Wrigglesworth has now managed to get Virgin Trains to change
their law regarding onboard ticket policies. He works this story through a charming opening set up, complete
with working train-set, and storytelling that would not be out of place in a Danny Wallace book.
The structure of this intimate show is technically superb, with past references revisited with wit and care,
culminating in what is, quite honestly, a beautiful finale. The show has been snapped up for a half-hour
Radio 4 recording, which I urge you to listen to.
Heart-warmingly beautiful, expertly structured and morally superior to any show you will see in a very long time.
