Champagne Chic in Turnham Green Terrace
C
harlotte’s Bistro is located in the premium leisure environs of Chiswick
and in the rapidly developing area of Turnham Green Terrace, which
is fast becoming a destination location in itself (particularly since the
establishment of the nearby Soho House Group’s ‘High Road’ brasserie).
Building on the successful heritage of another neighbourhood favourite,
‘Charlotte’s Place’ in nearby Ealing, this second privately-owned restaurant by Alex
Wrethman reflects the clear dining intention in the design of the menu dishes and
ingredients selection, by the clear designation: ‘Bistro’.
Whilst originally a Victorian shop premises, the site has been a restaurant since
the 1980’s and has passed through various ownerships including periods as an
Italian eatery and latterly as a failed branch of a national fish restaurant chain.
The neutral fanullade includes a folding door set (when milder weather permits)
allowing clear and uninterrupted views through to the new cocktail bar - with the
restaurant visible beyond and set within subtle background shades of taupe and
rich dark browns. With the new restaurant name clearly emblazed on the fascia
and viewable from both Chiswick High Road and Turnham Green Terrace, the
restaurant is sited at the important new leisure axis for Chiswick.
Working with the restrictions and elements of the existing architecture and
pre-defined spaces from numerous previous past alterations, MASS Designers
have defined both the separation and integration of a series of disparate spaces
and unified these as an enjoyable, cohesive and sociable environment for drinking
and eating. Set at street level, with an arresting bar front in black American walnut
and Maron Imperial marble, the bar is also home to narrower drinking/snacking
tables with both fixed and loose seating, including bespoke bar stools designed
and manufactured in the UK. The bar features a tall drink and spirit storage tower
and mindful of detail, includes handy low level coat hooks under the bar surface
for bags and jackets. Unusual high level ‘caboche’ pendant fittings and matching
wall lights compliment the distinct sense of ‘bar’ - separated from the main dining
experience by a full height, textured ceramic wall mosaic backdrop. >
