Rafayel on the Left Bank

ocated on the River at Falcon Wharf in
Battersea, Rafayel on the Left Bank is an
innovative 65 bedroom five star eco-boutique
hotel, restaurant and spa. It is the product of owner
and developer Ike Latif together with London based
designers LATIS. Rafayel is unique in its approach
to combine luxury with sustainability, two concepts
that are often seen as polar opposites within the
hospitality sector. The hotel has focused on high
quality design, practicality and an exceptional user-
experience in realising its concept.
Creating a new brand demands a strong design
ethos to inform all the aspects of the product.
“Unlike most hotel design projects that respond
to an existing brand standard or predefined set of
requirements, we had the opportunity to re-think the
conventions of hotel design”, explains Krishan Pattni,
design director at LATIS, “and this process is only
possible with a visionary client who is involved and
prepared to take the risk”. This close-knit relationship
between designer and client has been integral in
making the project possible. The hotel is based on Ike
Latif’s vision that “Being ‘green’ should be our overall
goal, but without compromising on the luxury that
the modern age offers us.”
‘Being green’ is a challenging ethos to
incorporate into a luxury hotel product both from
a commercial viability aspect and the fact that
sustainability contradicts the essence of what luxury
is perceived to be. To overcome this challenge the
