Issue 20 | March+Apri2010
The doors are opening
THETEAM After the excesses of the Christmas period, the first few months of the new year
are generally spent quietly indoors with little inclination to venture out at the
weekends and even less in the evenings. Despite the fact that we probably
haven’t seen the end of the unpredictable winter weather, psychologically,
everything changes in March. Officially, we can say it’s Spring (at the Vernal
Equinox on 20 March) but a more potent sign is the re-opening across the

off after their winter closure. We have our fair share in Somerset and our feature

year. It concerns the Water Mill and Barn at Hestercombe Gardens. Following
an extensive renovation that was two years in the making and 15 years in the

planning we will, from the end of April, be able to see, once more, the water mill

in action and a stunningly refurbished Barn (see page 36).

The American Museum in Bath also opens its doors again after a winter
slumber with an exciting new exhibition of its renowned Quilt collection. And

Quilts are very much ‘on trend’ in 2010 with a major show at the V&A which

will display, for the first time, not only its own collection of quilts but historically

important quilts brought from as far as Australia and as close as Exeter’s RAMM.
Our very own Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury clearly has its finger on the

fashion pulse as it showcases, this month, Somerset textile artist Alicia Merrett’s

There would be no Spring, and no Easter, without eggs. And this year there are

some very special eggs hatching in Somerset - and these are certainly not for

eating. These are eggs that will hatch and produce chicks that will fledge and

go on to become adult birds with an eight-foot wing span. I’m talking about
the Eurasian Crane. These birds will, it’s hoped, remain in Somerset and

breed across the Somerset Levels. It’s a very exciting prospect
and you can read the beginning of the story on page 42.
