Making way for the 380
Network Rail has begun work on a £20 million programme of platform
extensions at stations across Ayrshire and Inverclyde in preparation for the
arrival of new, longer Class 380 electric trains which are set to enter service
with ScotRail later this year.
As part of the same project, public address systems, lighting and CCTV will
either be installed or enhanced at some stations. Improvements are also to be
made at ScotRail’s depot and train servicing facility at Townhead in Ayr. Using
land within its existing footprint, contractors will construct new platforms,
track and overhead power lines to provide for the stabling and cleaning of the
new fleet.
The platform works and station enhancements - funded through Network
Rail’s Regulatory Asset Base on behalf of Transport Scotland - will be delivered
by Jarvis Rail, Babcock Rail and C Spencer. Carillion has been contracted to
design and build the new Townhead depot.
The project will be delivered without disrupting train services and will
