Short Takes | Colorado Club Sold to Staff and Members
At the end of last year, when Donald Scott Carew decided to sell his Mountain’s
Edge Fitness Center in Boulder, Colorado, he didn’t have to look any further
than his own staff for a prospective buyer. Longtime employee Shannon Derby,
backed by a dozen investing members and staff, stepped forward to assume
ownership of the 10-year-old club, which has 900 members. The final terms of
the deal were not released.
According to Derby, the club’s appeal stems not just from its amenities,
but from its strong sense of community. “We’re really not a club for people
to join; we’re a place where people want to belong,” said Derby, who’s now
the club’s managing partner. —|
