Bromo’s Crater and Sandy Desert Plains
After watching the sunrise, you can climb down again
and head to Mt Bromo. The sun’s rays will give you an all-
round view as you pass more than ten square kilometers
of volcanic desert. This patched area is covered with
sand with only remnants of dry grass; however, the wind
which blows the sand around can make it a little difficult
to breathe.
Since you can’t use a vehicle to reach the foot of Mt
Bromo, you will need to either walk or rent a horse (around
IDR70,000). Be warned though that the combination of
the lifting sand and the glare can make walking a bit of
a chore. After climbing the 250 steps skywards, you will
reach the crater which is 2,392 meters above sea level.
From the smoking crater you can enjoy a marvelous view
of the volcanic plains and Bromo’s Hindu temple which lies

right in the center. On a clear day, this is a truly magical
volcanic experience.
