C
hinese in Bali like to celebrate Imlek in a different
way from other cultures. For one thing, they like to
erect tall decorative poles (penjor) in front of their
houses which are similar to the ones you see at Galungan
time in Bali, but made from cane rather than bamboo.
Besides decoration at households and Buddhist temples,
hotels in the Sanur, Kuta and Nusa Dua areas have also
been “painted red and gold” to welcome Imlek.

Chinese in Bali pray both at their houses as well as
at Buddhist temples which are found all over the island.
Differing from everyday prayer rituals, they involve
offerings of specific food to wish for success in both their
private and business lives.
Barong Sai Parades
Processions that feature barong sai lions and dragons
are unique attractions which must be held as part of Imlek
celebrations. These lions and dragons dance compulsively,
shaking and leaping to surprise onlookers, and even
making children cry in fear.
These processions are meant to ostracize evil spirits and
can be witnessed throughout the island’s streets. Held one
day prior to Imlek, this gives Buddhists the opportunity to
celebrate Chinese New Year 2560 in a calm and respectful
manner.
Hindra Suarlin, caretaker of Dharmayana Temple, is
positive about religious harmony in Indonesia: “The way
Imlek is celebrated freely reflects the tolerance of this
country’s cosmopolitan culture—people can now live
together side by side without conflict.”
