C
reative collaborations can be a risky business (Madonna
and Prince’s This is Not a Love Song anyone?) but there’s
no denying that when a creative chemistry works, it’s best
to stand back and let the sparks fly. But what’s the secret to
artistic alchemy? “Communication and a shared vision are
a good start,” suggests Deryck Walker, and he should know.
As the current Scottish Fashion Designer of the Year, in the
past he’s worked with labels including Boudicca, Robert
Carey Williams and the mighty Versace in Milan, recently
collaborated with John Smedley, Orihica and Harris Tweed
and, since his return to Glasgow from London five years ago,
enjoyed a successful creative relationship with city based
photographer Wes Kingston. Kingston, who was born in
South Africa and raised in Belfast, came to Glasgow to study
photography at, the then, College of Building and Printing,
with the view to make the jump to London. “As the time
to graduate drew nearer,” says Wes, “I began discovering
more and more resources and forging strong relationships
here in Glasgow. The move to London didn’t seem quite so
necessary.” One of those resources was the SWG3 Studio
