Surespan boasts world’s tallest hatch
Surespan Limited is delighted to
have installed a hatch for the recently
opened Burj Khalifa - the world’s
tallest man-made structure in Dubai,
United Arab Emirates. Surespan has
custom manufactured a polished
grade 316 stainless steel 600mm di-
ameter ‘submarine’ style access hatch
which has been installed 816 metres
high, near to the top of the spire. It
has been specially designed to pro-
vide maintenance access to aircraft
warning lights and will have a special
plaque attached to it with the names
of all the main organisations that
have been associated with the project.
Five years in the making and cost-
ing more than US $4 billion, it was
expected to be completed by Sep-
tember 2009 and comprise exclusive
corporate offices, apartments and
restaurants, whilst the spire will
house various communication
equipment. Burj Dubai has been
designed to be the centrepiece of a
large-scale, mixed-use development
called Downtown Burj Dubai, which
is set to include 30,000 homes, nine
hotels and one of the world’s largest
shopping malls. Following the suc-
cess of this hatch, Surespan is
currently specifying further access
hatches for the project.
Surespan designs and manufactures
access hatches to suit all types of in-
ternal and external uses. Ranging from
FACTA Class A to F loadings, their
hatches are available in standard sizes
or can be custom made to suit your
needs. They also provide floor duct-
ing, handrail fittings, smoke release
dampers, roof lights and offer a com-
prehensive range of ladders, which
