WELCOME TO
SPORTINGWALES
Club v country is always one of the hottest sporting debates, but it raises its
head again in this issue with our feature on Wales soccer captain Ashley
Williams.
He and Swansea colleague Joe Allen were booed at the Cardiff City stadium in Wales colours,
while Scotland and Cardiff striker Ross McCormack was cheered by Bluebirds fans.
It was a confusing moment for commentators and received plenty of attention. Williams
himself plays it down - his continued passion for playing for Wales and leading his country
shines through in our article.
Would fans have had the same reaction if the game had been balanced on a knife edge – or if it
had been a competitive match instead of a friendly?
Who can tell – as Williams points out the fact the Cardiff v Swansea derby had been the
previous week also probably had an impact.
However SportingWales has no such ambiguity on these matters – it should be club AND
country.
What is the problem of supporting everyone who pulls on the Wales jersey as well as
supporting your club, that seems a pretty simple equation.
No-one sums up those values of total commitment to whatever jersey you are wearing more
than Blues and Wales fl anker Martyn Williams, whose Testimonial year is appropriately called
the Spirit of Rugby.
