Goes Together Like a Horse
and Carriage…
By Pat Van Nostrand
The gleaming white horse and white
carriage, decorated gaily with fl owers,
pulled up to the young woman’s house.
She was instructed to get in the carriage
and open the envelope that lay on the
seat. Inside were instructions to be driven
to a particular destination. Once there,
fl owers and another envelope awaited
the woman, and once again, inside the
envelope were directions to another place.
At this location there was a beautifully
wrapped box containing champagne, two
fl uted glasses, and another envelope with
further instructions to the fi nal destina-

a young man awaited her, and when the
carriage arrived, he came out and helped
her down, taking her to a small table with
two chairs set up under a fl oral arbor. The
young man kissed her hand, got down on
one knee, pulled out a ring box from his
pocket, and professed his love for her and

horse drawn carriages for weddings and
other private affairs, worked for several
years with another carriage company and
was smitten with not just the love of driv-

their owner decided to retire and move
