Being conveniently located just off the 91 and 405 freeways on
Cherry Avenue in Long Beach; we decided to stop by Crest Bar one
night on our way home from L.A. We were sure glad we did as we were
pleasantly greeted with a huge smile by their bartender, RJ!
Rage: How long have you been working at The Crest Bar?
RJ: I’m originally from the East Coast, New Jersey. I’ve only been
here for about a year and a half. I moved out here for acting. Don’t hate
me! (Laughs)…like everybody else, I’m the stereotypical bartender /
actor. But it works!
Rage: Did you study theatre in school?
RJ: I actually majored in radio, T.V. and film, so I do editing and
directing and all that stuff but my main passion is acting. I do a lot of
theatre and film.
Rage: How did you land the job at The Crest?
RJ: I found the job on
Craigslist.com. I got lost on the way to the
interview and was the last one. But they liked me and hired me on the
spot! I love it. It’s a great place to work.
Rage: Had you bartended before?
RJ: I have been bartending for over ten years. I went to Bartend-
ing School in New Jersey and then got a job at a gay bar called the
Coliseum. After that, I worked at a place called the Den Night Club for
over eight years.
RAGE: The Crest has a castle theme to it. What is the crowd like?
RJ: The owner, Michael does a great job. What I like about it the
most is that it’s so very down to earth. There’s no pretentiousness.
Everybody is just hanging out and everyone is very friendly. The

drinks are really good and really cheap!
Rage: What’s your favorite night there?
RJ: Sunday Undies from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. In which case, if you
check your pants with us at the bar, you get a discount off of your
drinks. During the day on Sunday, we have $5 pitchers. We also have

complimentary barbeque out on the patio with hamburgers and hot
dogs. We usually have free tacos on Saturdays with $3 Corona and
Jose Cuervo drinks.
Rage: Are there games?
RJ: There are lots of games, darts and everyone is big on pool. There
are always new things being added and lots of changes. We also sup-
port the Long Beach Pool League.
Rage: What’s your favorite drink to make?
RJ: I’m a big fan of the “Jäger Bomb.” It’s a shot of Jägermeister in
Red Bull. I was doing So-Co (Southern Comfort) for a while but I don’t
think I can do those anymore. “Red Headed Sluts” are also one of my
favorites. It’s Jager, Peach schnapps and cranberry juice. There’s also
a really strong drink called “F#@k Me Up.” It’s made with Malibu rum.
It’s got a floater of Bacardi 151 in it. You can’t really taste the 151 but
you feel it later.
Rage: When is happy hour?
RJ: We have happy hour every day of the week from 2:00 p.m. to
7:00 p.m. All domestic wells are $2.75. We also offer different drink
specials nightly. Wednesday is free pool. Friday is leather night. So
wear your leather and enjoy drink specials. But Sunday Undies is the
most popular. We’re even planning on having an underwear contest!
