A-LISTS film by david vera
Whether you welcome St. Valentine’s Day with open arms over a YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T HEAR IT HERE FIRST, BUT…
candle-lit dinner…or you begrudgingly observe Singles Awareness Day Valentine’s Day comes early this year—February 12 to be exact. I know, EV-
(S.A.D.) with a group of friends and a communal tub of cookie dough ice ERYONE and his PFLAG mother knows about this movie and is dying to take you
cream, February presents us a selection more varied than 21st-century to see it for the third time. But what you might not know about this feel-good
candy-heart messages. chick-flick is that it isn’t just 2010’s star-studded answer to He’s Just Not That Into
You. Casually intertwining storylines may have reached the peak of their popular-
ity last decade, but they’ve rarely ever been written this thoughtfully. An army
officer on leave (Julia Roberts) shares a flight with Holden (Bradley Cooper), a
gay man whose boyfriend is a closeted football star (Eric Dane). A florist (Ashton
Kutcher) proposes to his girlfriend (Jessica Alba) and finds out that his best
friend, Julia (Jennifer Garner), covets a man who turns out to be married (Patrick
Dempsey). Julia’s mother (Shirley MacLaine) is a happy retiree who feels the need
to tell her husband (Hector Elizondo) about an affair she had long ago, all while
their high-school-age granddaughter (Emma Roberts) plans to have sex with
her boyfriend—both schoolmates of a couple (Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift)
who are head over heels for each other. Meanwhile an assistant at a talent agency
(Anne Hathaway) is dating the mailroom assistant (Topher Grace)…and a pub-
licist (Jessica Biel) falls in love with her boss (Jamie Foxx). I’m personally looking
forward to seeing Lautner in something other than angry-wolf-mode.
Now for those of you who have vowed to never again watch another teen-
fiction-to-big-screen adaptation, may I propose that you get reacquainted with
Greek mythology before you turn away Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The
Lightning Thief? Uma Thurman stars as Medusa, for Zeus’ sake! Plus, this February
12 release will prepare you for the year’s Mediterranean main event next month:
Clash of the Titans! But until then, Percy Jackson discovers that he is the son of Po-
seidon, god of the sea and earthquakes, and that the legendary beings of Greek
mythology still exist—unfortunately so do monsters, cyclopes and empousai. It’s
not very long before he’s attacked because of his bloodline, but other “demigods”
like him soon present themselves—both allies and foes who are also in the pro-
cess of discovering their heritage and powers.
But if you’re not convinced by all the commotion, Dear John is a great example
of why a lot of hype doesn’t always equate to a load of bull. And on February 5,
you’ll understand why. Sure, three-decade-old Tatum Channing may be playing
pubescent, fresh-out-of-high-school army recruit John Tyree. But age is nothin’
but a number to Savanah (Amanda Seyfried), who falls for John in half a month. In
the aftermath of 9/11, however, their bond is put to every test as John is compelled
to tour the Middle East by his own sense of duty and not just standing orders.
UNCONVENTIONALLY YOURS
Shockingly devoid of comedy, Jim Carrey’s newest role is a breakthrough in
the February 5 release, I Love You Phillip Morris. While incarcerated, con artist,
impostor and multiple prison escapee Steven Jay Russell (Jim Carrey) falls in love
with his cell mate, Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). After Morris is released from
prison, Russell escapes from prison four times in order to be reunited with Morris.
In the simplest form, I Love You Phillip Morris is a true love story based on the real
life events of Steven Jay Russell and was adapted from I Love You Phillip Morris: A
True Story of Life, Love, and Prison Breaks by Steve McVicker.
On February 12, The Yellow Handkerchief follows three strangers of two gen-
erations who embark on a road trip through post-Katrina Louisiana. Dealing with
a painful past, Brett (William Hurt) crosses paths with Martine (Kristen Stewart), a
troubled teenager and her new ‘ride’ Gordy (Eddie Redmayne). Brett must decide
whether he wants to return to the uncertainty of his life and his ex-wife whom
he misses, Martine longs to escape her family and Gordy hopes to get close to
Martine. Along the way, relationships evolve and present this trio with the second
chances they’ve sought.
